1. Keywords in your Tag
Your tag should be no more than 6 words and consist of not only your Orginizations name but also keywords that describe you. The keyword order should be most important to least important (all being important of course). The Keywords in your are very important for a few reasons, Its the first thing a search engine sees along with the first thing that a web surfer sees in the listing.
2. Keywords in your Web address (URL)
Along with having keywords within a pages content you need to be sure that the pages name corresponds with the content on that page. For example: SEO Articles should have a page named seo-articles.html or something to that effect. This will create a high ranking keyword for your site of “SEO Articles”. Keep in mind that the content should match the name or it can hurt instead of help.
3. Keyword Density within your Content
Keywords within your website will ultimatly be the deciding factor in any SEO campaigne. The content should display important keywords about 1 in 20 and less important keywords about 1 in 50. Keep in mind that keywords of 1 in 10 or more can be flagged as keyword stuffing and has a very painful side effect in search engines.
4. Keyword in Heading Tags
When Creating your website be sure to have heading tags that have something to do with your websites content. For example, a page with an article about Search Engine Optimization should have a header something like <H1>SEO Techniques</H1>. Here as always be sure that the heading has something to do with the content or it could hurt more than help.
5. Keywords in anchor Text
More important from inbound links this is like an exceptance of your site by the others as well as showing a relationship between your website and the keywords the link is anchored using. For Example, Web Services would create a relationship between the keywords Web Services and mofiki.com. Even though this is most important for incomming links it also helps within your site as well.
6. Inbound links Reputation
The reputation of the websites that link to you has a huge benefit to how respected your site will be. The greater the Page Rank of the incomming link the greater it will increase your overall page rank.
7. Inbound links From Sites with Similar Content
Shows that you are popular in your demographic/community. This also shows that even competitive sites find your content useful enough to send visitors your way. This can be one of your greatest SEO increases to get your demographic to your site.
8. Inbound links from .gov and .edu domains
These are the cream of the crop links when talking SEO. Mainly because they are very hard to get and because .gov and .edu websites are known to be reputable and trusted sites. Sites with these extensions are only given to schools and government orginizations thus cannot be created by just any webmaster thus increasing the power of inbound links from such sites.
9. Number of Backlinks
The more the better!!! You should always be working on creating backlinks to your website as there is an unlimited number of websites that can possibly link to you. Pages that have higher pageranks are definatly more important as they are already established websites although even unknown websites linking to you will help. Keep in mind though that a backlink from a PR3 website will be as good as 100 PR0 websites easily so start with higher ranking sites but never turn down a backlink.
10. Relevent Unique Content
Having content that is not already all over the internet is a great advantage. Such as having a title and article on your site that has to do with a new software, product, or service that you may be one of a handfull of people to know about it. This creates unique keywords that only come up with a few pages and allows for you to compete with less of the billions of websites out there.
11. Changing Content Periodically
Search engines love to see new content on pages as well as regularly updated content. When you have a static page with few updates google and other search engines will slow their spider rate and will see your site less often. When you have changing content it creates a memory for the search engine that makes it see new content meaning that your site is active enough to spider regularly. Also if a site has the same content as yours but yours seems to be updated more frequently then you will show up before the other pages.
12. Error Reduction (custom error pages)
One of the most neglected areas in website development and SEO is forgetting to create custom error pages and improper redirects. 404 errors should have a custom page created with a brief summary of your website along with a sitemap of some kind. This helps you in 2 ways, one being that search engines having a link to a page that may no longer exist will go to a custom page and the search engine will not penalize you for a page not found, and two persons that are navigating your site when running accross a page that no longer exists can easily find what they are looking for from the error page.
