Getting Started with PHP & MySQL

Posted on 03 September 2011 by Moki

Since this is the first tutorial and I will be starting with PHP and MySQL (assuming that anyone here knows the basics namely HTML) I will be giving an overview of what it is.

What is PHP?
Simple enough PHP stands for PHP which is a hypertext processor. PHP is a server-side scripting language that is basically the same as ASP and all scripts are executed on the server. PHP supports databases such as but not limited to MySQL, Informix, Oracle, Sybase, Solid, PostgreSQL and Generic ODBC. Best of all PHP is open source meaning its free to download and use.

How is a PHP file structured?
PHP files are any file with the extension .php or .phtml and contain within the file text, HTML tags, and other scripts. When a PHP file is ran it displays as plain HTML leaving the end user having no access to the scripts being ran. PHP files may also be included within on another to make many pages look as though they are one.

What is MySQL?
MySql is a database server that is perfect for any size applications ran online under many different platforms. MySql supports SQL commands and most functions work exactly the same. Best of all, not only can you develop in windows and host on Unix platforms but its free to download and use.
